First blog by Marieke (ENG)

What an honour! I am asked to write the first blog of my new Health Mate – Cyclelive Team!

So many changes in the last couple of months. Unbelievable!

It really feels that I have reached a new milestone in cycling. After only a few years of cycling I find myself suddenly in a UCI Womans Team!

I cannot put into words how thankful I am to the staff of this very promising team to have put this together in just a few months. The team consists of 16 highly motivated and talented girls, all with our own strengths. I am very happy to be a part of this!

How did I get here so fast? Well, I just married the right guy! My husband Nico has transformed me from a goalie (football/soccer) to a cyclist in just 3 years. He has been coaching me all that time, on and off the bike. He taught me so much! We enjoyed every minute and celebrated every small step of progress. I can’t believe it was only 3 years ago when I first learned to click in my pedals! 😊

The first two years was just a struggle to put myself on the right spots in the peloton. Just last year I really started racing, attacked at good moments, found myself in lead groups and first lost a few sprints, a little later won some!

I invested a lot of training in endurance, because as a goalie I almost only trained on explosiveness with all that sprinting, jumping and diving. My body has totally changed and I feel more confident now for the longer races!

This winter I started working with WE-Train (Pascal Cloudt), who assists me from this moment on in training advice. In winter I do a lot of variation in training. Some longer rides I can share with my new teammate Janine also, who just lives a few kilometers away.

I have a great love for cyclocross racing in fall and winter, with Nico also as my Mecanico πŸ˜‰. For the moment this is only for fun, strength, technique and as preparation for the road season. But also on this terrain I feel a strong progression. I have raced a lot from September to November. In December we focused more on training and I will be back racing this weekend and just after Christmas to prepare for the Dutch national Championships in January. This will be my first race in my new bright blue clothes!

After the Championships, the cyclocross bikes will be put away for a while and the road season awaits!

I will be meeting the team just before the Velofollies 3-day exhibition, where we will be to present our team and sponsors to the cycling world. In February we will meet again for training camp.

Just after the training camp, end of February, the first road races are there! I start off with a pretty challenging double weekend! Really looking forward! More on the racing schedule, will be introduced later on! πŸ˜‰

Feeling very motivated and happy!
