In the breakaway of Ronde van Vlaanderen!
What a fantastic Tour of Flanders this year for Health Mate Ladies Team. Our riders one by one performed 200% in “Vlaanderens Mooiste”. It was especially Kylie Waterreus who put the team completely in the spotlight with riding in the breakaway of De Ronde nearly 120 km!!!
“My first Ronde van Vlaanderen was the best experience ever.” – told us the 21-year-old 🇳🇱 talent. “There are so many people cheering you on beside the road. I do not know any other race watched by so many people all over the world on television. Riding on the front so long of this race, showing that Health Mate Ladies Team is powerful on World Tour level was the best in my race career so far. I had complete confidence in my teammates to cover my breakaway from the peloton.”
How do you get in a strong breakaway in Tour of Flanders?
Kylie Waterreus: “The race began with 8 km neutralized start. After the car went away, 3 riders immediately attacked and another 2 chased them. I attacked after this duo with another rider of a Belgian UCI Team. After the Lange Munte we were with 7 in the front. On the Paddestraat, so many supporters encouraged our breakaway, that I had goosebumps and made me smile even through my body was suffering on this hard pave section. After many legendary hills in complete attention of the crowd, the media, the national and international TV, we arrived to Geraardsbergen. Here, the Muur made selection in our breakaway. We were left with 4 riders on the front. We made it to the Kanarieberg, riding almost 120 km-s in the breakaway.”
“At the Kanarieberg the peloton caught our breakaway. I tried to hang on, which was very difficult because the quite fresh world top riders were just about to open the “gas” and get rid of their concurrents. I had the support of Kathrin and Sara on my side. Everything was splitting to groups, the race exploded after they caught our breakaway. All the cheering people from the side gave me power over my limits and I could move back to the peloton. At the Oude Kwaremont I was sure I can finish the first Tour of Flanders of my life. I enjoyed every second of it” – said our young Dutch rider.
Kathrin Schweinberger finished 71st, Kylie Waterreus 75th and Sara Mustonen 97th in Ronde van Vlaanderen. Our Ladies and staff did a fantastic job together as a Team in one of the greatest Monuments of cycling sport. Congratulations Health Mate Ladies Team!
