I finished my last race of the season shortly after I received the news that my contract at Lares-Waowdeals wasn’t going to be extended. Although I had seen it coming, it still felt like a huge disappointment and failure. I haven’t reached my best shape in two years and that sometimes made me wonder if I still wanted to go on with cycling. I decided to try and find another team anyway but it never had been this difficult for me, until now.
After talking to my new employer at Cyclelive Magazine, his idea came up about starting a new team. In only a few weeks’ time the foundation for a new clubteam was built. Only a few weeks after, a new big main sponsor connected his name to our team and so, Health Mate – Cyclelive Team was born!
At the beginning of October I was privileged to end my season in Mallorca on a bike holiday with Stuart Hall Cycling, British cycling tours. Together with my teammate at Lares, Sarah Inghelbrecht, we have spent an awesome ten days in cycling paradise! We rode our bike every day for at least four hours but because of the slow daily routine it didn’t feel like training at all…
After a short resting period I decided to pick up everything where I had left it and started working towards 2018, together with my trainer Pascal Cloudt, who will also be involved in the new team! Thanks to a lot of friends in the area where I live since January I’m motivated enough to go out riding, even when it’s cold or wet. Thanks to my boyfriend who is also a cyclist, I’m motivated again to give it my utmost best. We try to enjoy some time off the bike as well and sometimes we even get to wear something else besides lycra…
During the week I spent most of my training time in the gym doing core and strength exercises and do some small rides on the rollers. I started using Zwift which made my training time on the rollers a lot more durable and fun! Don’t forget to add me and join me for a ride sometime!
Normally my season starts in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, a race which I haven’t done anymore in the last four or five (?) years! With a fulltime job in the past it was a hard task to finish a race like this and therefore I decided year after year to not try at all and to stay safe of injuries or crashes. But this year everything can be, or should I say must be, different! Also, to make it even more exciting, the race will now finish in Ninove, at less than 10km away from my doorstep.
My goals are mainly to get big results in national races such as the regional and Belgian championships. To step on the podium of national races and to get a nice result in a flat UCI race should be in my reach. A selection for the Tour of Flanders would be a dream come true.
Let’s make it count!
I wish everyone a healthy, romantic & sporty 2018!
